Inquest opened into death of skydiving centre worker in Nottinghamshire

Daily Mail ·

An inquest has been opened into the death of 22-year-old Madeleine Trask at Langar Airfield in Nottinghamshire on 5 July. The brief hearing was told she suffered a head injury, but gave no further details about the incident; the inquest was adjourned to a date yet to be set.

Trask had worked as a parachute packer at Skydive Langar for three and a half years and was a former president of the University of Nottingham’s skydiving club. Police said she was found in a nearby field and pronounced dead at the scene. The centre, which says it is the UK’s busiest civilian skydiving centre and facilitates more than 50,000 jumps a year, described the incident as involving an experienced skydiver; British Skydiving launched an investigation.

  • Madeleine Trask, 22, died at Langar Airfield on 5 July.
  • An inquest heard a post-mortem gave a provisional cause of death as a head injury.
  • Investigations were launched after the incident.

An inquest is a public hearing that examines who died and how, when a death may need further investigation. It does not decide whether anyone is criminally responsible.

Langar Airfield is home to Skydive Langar, a centre where people make parachute jumps. Madeleine Trask worked there packing parachutes and had been involved in the University of Nottingham’s skydiving club.

The incident also prompted an investigation by British Skydiving, the sport’s governing body in the UK. Understanding what happened may help establish how Trask died and whether any lessons can be drawn for skydiving safety.
