A 14-year-old Call of Duty title, Black Ops 2, has overtaken Fortnite as the most-played game on PlayStation Network in the US, according to data from analytics firm Circana. The shift is notable because Fortnite has consistently dominated the PlayStation charts, and its displacement by a decade-old rerelease highlights how few major new releases have launched this summer, with players instead gravitating back towards established classics.

The data covers the week ending 18 July, during which Black Ops 1 also featured on the PlayStation list alongside Black Ops 2, suggesting a broader appetite for older Call of Duty entries over Activision's current release, Black Ops 7, and its Warzone spin-off. On Xbox, Fortnite retained the top spot for the same period, followed by Roblox, the Call of Duty HQ app and Grand Theft Auto V, with EA Sports College Football 27 the only new-ish release cracking the top ten. Several anticipated titles, including Beast of Reincarnation, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Star Wars: Zero Company, are due in August.
