Coventry City have signed goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton for a club-record £22.5m, as Frank Lampard's side prepare for their Premier League return after a 25-year absence. The 25-year-old had impressed on loan at Coventry last season, playing a key role in their Championship title-winning promotion campaign, and the permanent deal reunites him with a manager keen to build on that success ahead of a tough top-flight opener.

Rushworth started all 46 league matches for Coventry last season and won the Golden Glove award with 17 clean sheets. He joined Brighton from non-league Halifax in 2019 without making a senior appearance, having spent time on loan at Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea and Hull, and Brighton are said to have secured a sell-on clause and buyback option that could push the deal's value to £30m with add-ons. He is Coventry's fourth summer signing, following a club-record £17m move for defender Aurèle Amenda plus the arrivals of Loum Tchouna and Frank Onyeka, while Coventry begin their season away at Arsenal on 21 August.
