French Action Film ‘Red Bird’ Lands CIS Deal as D.C. Romance ‘Step Back, Doors Closing’ Bows at Tokyo Market (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety ·

Cappu Films has sold French action film “Red Bird” to Kinologistika LLC for distribution in Russia and other former Soviet states, while taking on international sales for the American indie romance “Step Back, Doors Closing”. The two deals put both films before international buyers at the TIFFCOM market during the Tokyo International Film Festival.

“Red Bird”, shot in Marseille and released in French cinemas in January, follows Max as he investigates the unexplained death of his father, a covert operative known as Red Bird. “Step Back, Doors Closing” follows two strangers who meet on a Washington, D.C. Metro train and spend 24 hours exploring the city as a romance develops. It premiered at Dances With Films in 2024 and has been released in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean; Cappu is seeking sales partners for other territories.

In short

  • “Red Bird” has secured a CIS distribution deal.
  • Cappu Films is handling international sales for “Step Back, Doors Closing”.
  • The romance is seeking buyers beyond North America and the Caribbean.

Explained simply

International film sales are deals that give a company the right to distribute a film in particular countries or regions. “Former Soviet states” refers to countries that were once part of the Soviet Union; Russia is one of them. Film markets bring producers, sales companies and potential distributors together to negotiate such deals.

Cappu Films is handling international sales for both films. Kinologistika LLC is the distributor named for “Red Bird” in Russia and other former Soviet states, while Cappu is looking for distributors for “Step Back, Doors Closing” in territories where it has not yet been released. This matters because distribution deals help films reach audiences beyond their original markets.
