Gambia allocates $2.57m from Jammeh mansion sale to victims

BBC World ·

The Gambia will use $2.57m from the sale of former president Yahya Jammeh’s US mansion to compensate victims and survivors of his rule. The payment turns proceeds from property the US said was bought with misappropriated public funds towards reparations.

Jammeh ruled for more than 20 years after seizing power in a 1994 coup, and left office in 2017 after losing an election and facing regional pressure. A Gambian inquiry found he had amassed more than $300m through misappropriation and linked state abuses to the deaths of 240 to 250 people; authorities also found hundreds of properties and more than 100 bank accounts connected to him.

  • The Gambia received $2.57m from the sale of Jammeh’s Maryland mansion.
  • The money will go to victims and survivors of his rule.
  • An inquiry linked state abuses to 240 to 250 deaths.
