Game of Thrones Is Officially Bringing Back Daenerys Targaryen

Polygon · 3 hours ago

A new real-time strategy game, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros from Playside Studios, will bring back Daenerys Targaryen and the Night King as playable army leaders, according to a trailer shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The reveal matters because Daenerys was killed off in the original television series' contentious finale, so her return in game form offers fans a chance at the "wish fulfilment" of an alternative outcome, including potentially claiming the Iron Throne, something the trailer suggests successful players will do.

Alongside Daenerys, modelled on Emilia Clarke's portrayal, and the Night King, the roster includes Jon Snow, Robb Stark and Jaime Lannister. The game is due out in 2027 and joins a broader expansion of the franchise, which also includes HBO's prequel series House of the Dragon (concluding with a fourth season in 2028) and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (season two due 2027), a Royal Shakespeare Company stage production transferring to London next year, and a Warner Bros. film based on the "Aegon's Conquest" storyline from Fire & Blood.
