The One-Day Cup is a domestic cricket competition in England and Wales, played in groups before the leading teams progress to the quarter-finals. Teams earn points from their results, so wins can change who is best placed to qualify.

The story concerns the race for those places in two groups. Durham, Leicestershire, Middlesex and Yorkshire are among the teams competing, with each side trying to finish high enough to reach the knockout stage.

The standings matter because a group lead or a place near the top can improve a team’s chances of progressing, while teams close behind still have opportunities to catch up. A game in hand means a side has played one fewer match and has an extra result still to come.
