GB win three golds at European Championships
Great Britain won three gold medals at the European Rowing Championships in Varese, Italy, taking victories in the women’s four, PR3 mixed coxed four and a men’s four development event. The results provide an encouraging marker ahead of the 2026 World Championships later this month, although Britain’s main men’s squad did not compete.
Eleanor Brinkhoff, Angharad Broughton, Sarah Marshall and Holly Youd resisted a late German challenge in the women’s four. The PR3 mixed coxed four won by nearly six seconds over Italy, while Theo Bell, Josh Brangan, Sam Ford and Tom O’Sullivan held off Romania in the men’s four; the World Championships will be held in the Netherlands from 24 to 30 August.

The European Rowing Championships are a competition between national teams, with races in different boat classes. Crews are named for the number of rowers and, in some events, whether a cox steers and directs the boat.
Great Britain’s three golds came in the women’s four, the PR3 mixed coxed four, and a men’s four development event. PR3 is a category in para rowing for athletes with eligible impairments; a coxed crew has a coxswain who steers and calls instructions.
European results can offer a measure of how crews are performing, but they do not determine the outcome of the World Championships. Britain’s main men’s squad did not race at the European event, so the men’s development crew’s win gives only part of the picture of the national team’s form.
