Great Britain's Amy Hunt won the 100m title at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, securing the host nation's first gold of the event and her first senior international title. The 24-year-old, who had previously claimed world 200m silver in Tokyo and Commonwealth 100m silver just two weeks earlier, finally converted her run of near-misses into gold on home soil at Alexander Stadium.

Hunt crossed the line in 11.00 seconds, surging from fifth to first over the closing stages of the race, ahead of Poland's Ewa Swoboda (11.02) and Belgium's Delphine Nkansa (11.06). Defending champion Dina Asher-Smith, chasing a record seventh European title, finished fifth in 11.10. It capped a strong opening day for the hosts, who also took silver in the mixed 4x400m relay as Yemi Mary John held off the Netherlands in the home straight, finishing behind winners Norway.
