Google has announced that Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users, making it the fastest product in the company's history to hit that mark, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. The milestone matters because it signals that Google's aggressive, years-long push to embed AI across its ecosystem is translating into genuine adoption, even amid public scepticism about AI tools, and it strengthens Google's competitive position against rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.

The figure counts only people who actively use the Gemini app, web interface or Gemini Live, not those encountering Gemini features elsewhere in Google's products. Gemini VP Josh Woodward revealed that 63% of active users rely on voice input, 20% of Gemini Live users share camera or screen feeds, and users generate roughly 150 million images daily. Google credits Android's default Gemini app for much of the growth, though more than 100 million users are on iOS, where the app must be downloaded manually. The report also notes headwinds, including Google's negative cash flow from AI infrastructure spending, the departure of key researchers, Demis Hassabis stepping back from DeepMind leadership, and a delayed release of the promised Gemini 3.5 Pro model.
