Merz warns Russian spying remains high after Ukrainian suspect’s arrest

BBC World ·

Germany is facing what Chancellor Friedrich Merz described as “intensive” espionage, after a Ukrainian national was arrested on suspicion of collecting military-related information for Russia. Merz called the case’s discovery a success but said Russian intelligence activity in Germany remains consistently high, warning that further cases are likely.

Prosecutors say Vadym Y. had been in contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025. They allege he gathered information about the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives; he was due to appear before an investigating judge on Friday. The arrest comes amid several other espionage investigations in Germany this year, as the country remains a major European supplier of weapons to Ukraine.

In short

  • A Ukrainian man was arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia.
