Glen Hansard’s Swell Season Bandmate Markéta Irglová Pays Tribute, Bono Shares Re-Written ‘Beautiful Day’ Lyrics: ‘Big Spirit on a Big Mission’
A day after Glen Hansard was laid to rest in Dublin, his former Swell Season bandmate Markéta Irglová paid tribute to him in a Facebook post, describing him as "a big spirit on a big mission" whose gift she had been honoured to help carry. The Oscar-winning musician, 56, died in an early-morning motorcycle crash in Dublin the previous week, prompting an outpouring of grief from fellow musicians who attended his funeral at St Patrick's Cathedral.
Irglová's post, set to the pair's 2023 song "The Answer is Yes," accompanied a photo of the two of them, and she wrote that she thanked Hansard and God "for the trust" and knew they would "meet again." The funeral itself drew U2's Bono and The Edge, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Hozier, Imelda May and others, with Bono delivering a spoken-word rendition of "Beautiful Day" featuring lyrics he had rewritten in Hansard's honour, later shared alongside a painting of Hansard by artist Colin Davidson. Vedder performed Hansard's "The Song of Good Hope" with Irglová, Hansard's brother Richie gave the eulogy, and the service closed with a group rendition of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young."
