Government approves drilling in Jackdaw gas field in North Sea

Developing story first seen 2 hours ago

The Independent ·

The government has approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, saying domestic production could support energy security this winter and protect jobs. The decision has drawn criticism from environmental campaigners, who argue the project will worsen climate change without reducing energy bills or meaningfully improving security of supply.

Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh approved the project on Wednesday after public consultations closed in August. Its owner, Adura, says Jackdaw could provide about 6 per cent of UK North Sea gas production; Greenpeace UK says it would create 27 full-time jobs. The project and the Rosebank oil field were licensed in 2022, but court challenges overturned those approvals. Rosebank is still awaiting a separate government decision.
