Government making up China policy as it goes along, say MPs
A cross-party committee of MPs says the UK government has failed to provide a consistent China policy, leaving businesses uncertain and increasing risks to national security. It wants ministers to set clearer limits on trade and investment, and to take stronger action to protect sensitive data, technology and supply chains.
The Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee proposed “red” and “green” zones to show where trade with China is acceptable, and recommended preparing tariffs if China continues subsidising industry or does not provide fair market access. It also called for a ban on connected technology in critical national infrastructure, faster guidance for universities working with Chinese organisations, and a ban on imports made with forced labour. The government rejected the committee’s conclusion, saying it would pursue opportunities while safeguarding national security.
In short
- MPs say UK China policy lacks consistency.
- Committee wants clearer rules for businesses.
- Government says it balances opportunity with security.
