Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Crashes San Diego Comic-Con For Pop-Up Ice Cream Truck Performance of ‘Basket Case’

Billboard · 2 hours ago

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong staged a surprise mini-set outside San Diego's Petco Park on 24 July 2026, climbing atop an ice cream truck to perform the band's 1994 hit "Basket Case" to promote their forthcoming film Nimrods. The stunt formed part of San Diego Comic-Con promotional activity and delighted fans who had gathered in Gallagher Square, underlining the band's efforts to build buzz around their new coming-of-age road trip comedy ahead of its cinema release.

Armstrong was later joined by bandmates Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt, and together they handed out T-shirts, cassettes and ice cream from the branded truck to the assembled crowd. Cast members including Jenna Fischer and Mason Thames, along with director Lee Kirk, also attended. Nimrods, co-produced by Green Day and previously known as New Year's Rev, opens in US cinemas on 14 August, while its accompanying soundtrack — featuring 22 Green Day classics plus new and unreleased material — is due out on 31 July.
