Grieving father of nurse slain by boyfriend recalls killer’s terrifying admission on phone call before he turned gun on himself
Nurse Andrea Cantarini, 37, and her boyfriend Juan Cornelio Diaz, 38, were found dead from gunshot wounds in their Bronx apartment in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide linked to a domestic dispute. Cantarini’s father says he stayed on the phone with her during the confrontation and heard Diaz tell him she was dead; the case has left their six-year-old daughter without her mother.
Rudy Cantarini said his daughter called at 8.47pm, telling him Diaz had a gun to her head, and that he pleaded with Diaz to let her go. Police arrived shortly after 9pm on Tuesday and found both dead. Cantarini worked at St Barnabas Hospital, while Diaz was a Customs and Border Protection agent based at JFK Airport; her father said she had wanted to end the relationship, and relatives and colleagues had urged her not to return home.
