Grim warning David Jones could disappear in the ‘very near future’ as iconic chain reviews its Aussie stores

Daily Mail ·

David Jones has confirmed it is reviewing its Australian stores and trading terms with suppliers as it tries to adapt to changing retail conditions. Retail expert Barry Urquhart warned the 188-year-old department store could disappear soon, arguing it has lost relevance over several decades.

The company recorded a $95.5 million pre-tax loss for the year to 29 June 2026, while sales fell 8.7 per cent. Its lender, Hilco, says it provided funding above the agreed facility to increase stock ahead of Christmas, and remains supportive; owner Anchorage Capital Partners has also appointed chief executive Erica Berchtold to lead a turnaround. Urquhart points to online shopping, specialist competitors and pandemic-related pressure, and says David Jones has 39 stores and about $2 billion in turnover.
