Halloween candy favorites could leave adults with cracked teeth and far worse, says dentist

Fox News ·

A dentist has warned that some Halloween treats can damage adult teeth or dental work as well as contribute to cavities. Hard sweets may crack teeth, while sticky or chewy ones can dislodge fillings and crowns or keep sugar against teeth for longer; sour sweets can expose enamel to acid.

Dr Marc Lazare, a New York dentist with nearly 30 years’ experience, says people with restorations, existing cracks or teeth weakened by grinding may be more vulnerable. He recommends enjoying treats in moderation, choosing chocolate, especially dark chocolate without sticky fillings, and avoiding frequent snacking. After eating sweets, rinse with water and wait about an hour before brushing; contact a dentist promptly if a restoration comes out.

In short

  • Hard sweets can crack teeth, while sticky treats may pull out dental work.
  • Frequent snacking and sour sweets can prolong acid exposure.
  • Rinse with water and wait an hour before brushing.

Explained simply

Tooth enamel is the hard outer layer that protects teeth, while fillings and crowns repair or cover damaged teeth. Hard sweets can put pressure on teeth, and sticky or chewy sweets may pull at dental work; sugary treats can also contribute to decay, while sour sweets contain acids that can wear enamel.

People with fillings, crowns, existing cracks or teeth weakened by grinding may be more vulnerable to damage. This matters because a cracked tooth or dislodged restoration may need dental treatment, and repeated exposure to sugar or acid can harm teeth over time.
