‘Harry Potter’ HBO Series Casts James Potter and Lily Potter, Plus Charlie Weasley in Character’s Screen Debut

Variety ·

The HBO Harry Potter series has cast Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley, Jasper Talbot as James Potter and Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter for its first season. Charlie, Ron Weasley’s older brother, did not appear in the films, making his inclusion a change from their approach to the story; James and Lily have appeared in the films through flashbacks and other magical scenes.

The season, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, is due to premiere on 25 December. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. The second season, based on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, is already filming near London and will include Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart.

In short

  • Harry Gilby, Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn join the first season.
  • Charlie Weasley is making his screen debut in the series.
  • The first season premieres on 25 December.

Explained simply

Harry Potter is a fantasy story about a boy who discovers he is a wizard and attends Hogwarts, a school for magic. The first season follows the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where he begins to learn about his family and the wider wizarding world.

The Weasleys are a large wizarding family, and Ron is one of Harry’s closest friends at Hogwarts. Charlie is Ron’s older brother, known in the books for working with dragons; James and Lily are Harry’s parents, whose past is central to the story.

The series is a new television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books, following earlier film versions. Its choices about which characters and events to include can differ from those films, while the story draws on the same fictional world.
