Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has defended comments he made calling America a country he "hates," insisting on his livestream that this was his "God-given" and "constitutionally protected right." The remarks were prompted by an attack advert targeting Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, which used footage of Piker's past statements to highlight his association with the campaign. The row matters because it has become a point of friction within the Democratic Party, with El-Sayed increasingly seeking distance from Piker as the general election approaches.

Piker argued his anger was directed at the American government's failure to help the sick, hungry and homeless despite the country's wealth, rather than at ordinary Americans, and dismissed criticism from both liberals and Republicans as misrepresenting his views. El-Sayed campaigned alongside Piker during the primary but has since disavowed his past comment that America "deserved" the 9/11 attacks, while still criticising what he called "cancel culture". Piker himself, speaking at the 2026 Socialism Conference in Chicago, said his underlying argument about US foreign policy in the Middle East was not controversial, but conceded that his choice of the word "deserved" had been a mistake.
