Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Use AI to Vote
AI chatbots are being used by some US voters to learn about candidates and policies ahead of the midterm elections, but their answers can be inaccurate or out of date. Research cited in the article found errors in election guidance and frequent reliance on politically funded websites, raising concerns that chatbots may mislead voters.
Pew Research found that about half of surveyed US adults had used an AI chatbot, while 8 per cent had used one for midterm information. Forum AI found almost 40 per cent of election answers from mainstream chatbots contained at least one factual error, including a wrong Pennsylvania ballot request deadline. NewsGuard found chatbots cited “pink slime” sites in nearly half of searches; ChatGPT did so in more than 70 per cent, compared with Grok in 30 per cent.
In short
- Chatbots can give voters inaccurate or outdated election information.
- Nearly 40 per cent of answers reviewed contained factual errors.
