NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers carried out a dramatic high-altitude rescue of a 31-year-old woman threatening to jump from the Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday evening. The operation matters as a striking example of specialist police work, with officers scaling the bridge's suspension cables to reach the woman perched on a narrow steel beam some 276 feet above the East River, footage of which has since been released by the department.

Police responded at around 7.38pm after multiple 911 calls reported a person in distress. For nearly an hour, specially trained officers edged along the cables and spoke calmly with the woman, urging her to accept help as traffic backed up and crowds gathered below. Body camera footage captured one officer, who introduced himself as Chris, gently trying to engage her and warning against making a "permanent solution to a temporary problem".
