Police in Ramapo, New York, were called out to capture an emu that had escaped from a local petting zoo, in an incident that combined an unusual animal welfare call with a light-hearted display of modern policing technology. The bird bolted at around 8.45am on 12 September and was tracked down roaming a roadside, prompting officers to use a drone alongside ground units to locate and recapture it before it could stray into traffic or come to harm.

Officers initially struggled to catch the agile bird, with video shared by the Town of Ramapo Police Department showing it dodging two attempts before finally being secured on the third try using a rope harness. The department used a Skydio drone, deployed as a "First Responder," to monitor the emu's movements from the air while ground officers coordinated the chase. The unnamed emu was returned unharmed to the petting zoo, with police confirming no injuries or citations resulted, and joking on social media about the bird's "unauthorised tour" of the town.
