iOS 27 brings parked-car video to compatible CarPlay systems
Apple’s iOS 27 lets people watch videos through CarPlay when their car is parked, but the feature depends on both a compatible vehicle and supported video apps. The change extends CarPlay beyond its usual focus on navigation, audio and messaging, while keeping playback restricted in supported systems once the car starts moving.
Only a small number of apps currently support CarPlay video directly, and YouTube and Netflix are not among them. AirPlay can stream video from an iPhone or iPad with iOS 26.4 or later; native video apps require iOS 27. The car must have “video-in-car” technology, a screen of at least 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, HEVC support and at least 4GB of memory, so many older systems may not work. Android-based dashboard boxes can bypass some limits, including the parked-only restriction, which could make viewing while driving distracting.
In short
- CarPlay video is available with iOS 27 in compatible parked cars.
- AirPlay streaming requires iOS 26.4 or later.
- Many older dashboards lack the hardware needed for video.
