How US midterms have cost a record $12bn as cost of living soars
US midterm election spending is approaching a record $12bn, even as rising living costs and affordability dominate campaign agendas. The scale has renewed criticism that wealthy donors, corporations and interest groups can exert outsized influence over candidates and policy.
Democratic candidates are expected to spend more than $2.2bn, compared with $1.4bn by Republicans. Independent groups’ spending is estimated at $11.9bn, nearly triple the $4.12bn recorded in 2016; major Republican super PACs include the Senate Leadership Fund, at $489m, and MAGA Inc, at $353m. Elon Musk has given $445m to Republicans, according to campaign finance records.
In short
- US midterm spending is nearing a record $12bn.
