Dinniman, the series' author, notes that Hays' interpretations have become so integral to his creative process that he now automatically writes with those voices in mind.

Following the announcement of a live-action television adaptation headed to Peacock, producers cast Hays in the role of Princess Donut—a character whose voice has become iconic through the audiobook series. Hays has indicated openness to contributing beyond this primary role, though he expressed primary interest in securing the Princess Donut character. The production remains in early stages, with the eighth book recently released and no official premiere date yet confirmed for the television series.
