A 33-year-old Mexican national who had previously been deported and illegally re-entered the United States has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after a suspected drunk-driving crash killed a newly engaged 23-year-old Ohio teacher. Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez allegedly lost control of his SUV on US Route 33 in Fairfield County, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the car of Cameron Lyon, who died at the scene, while his fiancée Abrielle Kerns was seriously injured. The case has drawn political attention, with Republican Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy calling the death preventable and vowing tougher action on illegal immigration if elected.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Uribe-Gonzalez first entered the US illegally in January 2020, was arrested by Border Patrol, and was deported that April after a removal order, before illegally returning at an unknown date. He has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, drink-driving and driving without a valid licence, and immigration officials have lodged a detainer asking Ohio authorities to hand him over for federal custody. Lyon, a recent Otterbein University graduate, had just begun his first teaching job at Crestline Exempted Schools and was remembered by his community as much-loved; Kerns remains in intensive care.
