In 1993, Jeff Bridges made a movie he wasn’t happy with, but nobody hated it more than his mother

Far Out ·

Jeff Bridges’ mother, Dorothy, strongly disliked his 1993 thriller *The Vanishing*, in which he plays a professor who kidnaps a woman and buries her alive. Bridges was unhappy with the film too, believing its revised ending weakened the story, so her reaction reflected concerns he also had about the remake.

The film reworked George Sluizer’s 1988 Dutch original and changed its bleak ending to make it more acceptable to American audiences. Bridges called that change “kind of a pity”; despite the adjustment, the remake failed to recoup its budget at the box office. Dorothy had also objected to Bridges playing the pot-smoking Dude in *The Big Lebowski*, but said the crimes in *The Vanishing* were worse.

In short

  • Dorothy Bridges hated her son’s 1993 thriller.
  • Jeff Bridges also felt the remake missed the mark.
  • Its softened ending failed to help it at the box office.
