Former British number one Jack Draper has withdrawn from the ATP Tour event in Washington, the latest setback in a persistent arm injury that has severely disrupted his season. The 24-year-old left-hander had spoken positively about his fitness ahead of the Mubadala DC Open and looked strong in practice under new coach Andy Murray, but pulled out on Monday after feeling renewed soreness, echoing his last-minute withdrawal from Wimbledon a month earlier.

Draper has been troubled by bone bruising in his serving arm for more than a year and has played just 14 matches in the past 12 months, causing him to drop to 147th in the world rankings from a career-high of fourth. He remains hopeful of competing in Montreal and Cincinnati before the US Open begins on 30 August, a tournament where he reached the semi-finals in 2024, though he would need qualification or a wildcard given his current ranking. Mackenzie McDonald will replace him as a lucky loser in the Washington draw.
