Imperial AI datacentre plan faces local opposition and environmental review

The Guardian ·

Sebastian Rucci’s plan to build what he describes as California’s largest AI datacentre in Imperial has stalled after strong local opposition and a judge’s ruling. The dispute reflects a wider tension between the economic promise of AI infrastructure and concerns about its effects on nearby communities.

Rucci proposed a facility of nearly one million square feet, about the size of 16 football fields, and said he had invested around $5m. He promoted possible jobs, tax revenue and Google’s interest as a potential tenant, while residents raised concerns about water use, emissions, wildlife, the power grid and noise. More than half a dozen lawsuits and recall efforts followed, and a 45-day moratorium was approved; a judge has now required an extensive environmental review before the project can proceed.

  • Imperial’s proposed AI datacentre is on hold pending environmental review.
  • Residents raised concerns over water, power, emissions and wildlife.
  • Rucci promoted jobs and revenue, with Google reportedly interested as a tenant.
