A Georgia second-grade teacher has drawn online attention after creating a designated “fart corner” in her classroom, intended to let pupils discreetly pass wind away from their classmates. The idea matters because it has prompted debate over whether schools should accommodate ordinary bodily functions or whether the arrangement could unintentionally single out children.

Teacher Candy Sydney-Browning said she introduced the area because she has a weak stomach and struggled with classroom smells. Known as the “Gusty Winds Area”, it includes Febreze and allows children to briefly step aside before returning to lessons; reactions have ranged from seeing it as practical and normalising to arguing it may create a new source of embarrassment.
