Iowa teacher, 10-year-old student die during fifth grade school field trip at Lake Macbride State Park
A 24-year-old teacher and a 10-year-old pupil died during a fifth-grade school field trip at Lake MacBride State Park in Iowa. The incident occurred near the Coralville Reservoir spillway, prompting a large search and recovery operation and causing significant distress within the Iowa City Community School District.
Authorities identified the victims as Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, and Ahmed Osman, one of her pupils. Responders recovered Jorgensen shortly after noon on Tuesday and Ahmed at 1:24 p.m. on Wednesday, after suspending the search overnight; more than a dozen agencies assisted, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
