Italy’s RAI Cinema International Boards Edoardo De Angelis’ ‘The Fire Within You’ Ahead of Venice Launch, Reveals First Clip (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 1 hour ago

RAI Cinema International Distribution has acquired world rights to "The Fire Within You," a dark tragicomedy from Neapolitan director Edoardo De Angelis, ahead of its premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival. The announcement marks De Angelis's third major appearance at Venice, following his 2016 breakout "Indivisible" and his 2023 opening film "Comandante," and sees him competing for the Golden Lion with a more intimate, character-driven story than his previous epics.

The film is adapted from Antonio Franchini's autobiographical, prizewinning book "Il fuoco che ti porti dentro" and centres on a fraught Christmas Eve reunion between a man and his domineering, contradictory mother, Angela, blending comedy with emotional reckoning. It is produced by Picomedia, part of Fremantle's Asacha Media Group, in partnership with RAI Cinema, and De Angelis has described being drawn to the project by his fascination with dismantling the stereotypical "loving Neapolitan mother" archetype. Variety also released an exclusive first clip alongside comments from the director on adapting Franchini's book.

Italy's RAI Cinema is a major distributor tied to the state broadcaster, and picking up a film ahead of Venice is a routine but telling step: it signals confidence in a title's commercial and awards prospects. Edoardo De Angelis is a well-known Neapolitan filmmaker who has appeared at the Venice Film Festival before, and Venice itself is one of the world's leading film festivals, where the main prize is called the Golden Lion.

The film in question is based on a real memoir by writer Antonio Franchini and tells a personal, family-focused story set around a Christmas Eve reunion between a son and his mother. It is being made by production company Picomedia, which is part of a larger media group, working alongside RAI Cinema.

This kind of story matters to industry watchers because it shows how films are financed, distributed and positioned for major festivals before the public ever sees them, and because a strong Venice showing can shape a film's international sales and awards chances later in the year.
