J.J. Abrams’ Best Original Sci-Fi Movie Officially Finds a New Home on Streaming

Polygon ·

Cloverfield is now streaming on Peacock, as well as Paramount Plus and free on Pluto TV. The 2008 film combines found-footage horror with a monster attack, using a group of young adults’ camcorder recordings to show New York falling into chaos.

J.J. Abrams came up with the idea after wanting to create an original monster rather than use Godzilla or King Kong; Drew Goddard wrote the script and Matt Reeves directed. The 85-minute film follows Rob and his friends as they try to reach Beth after an explosion strikes during his leaving party, keeping the focus on their efforts to cross a city they know rather than explaining the creature.
