Jack Reacher’s Most “Grotesque” Problem Has Officially Been Solved [Exclusive]
Lee Child has asked his younger brother Andrew, who now leads the Jack Reacher novels, to make the character’s relationship with technology more believable. Child said Reacher’s long-standing reluctance to use modern technology had become so extreme that it seemed “grotesque”, even though readers may find it reassuring when a hero is less technically capable than they are.
Andrew Child’s experience working in the technology industry made him well suited to update the character. The aim is to move Reacher forward only slightly: he is not being turned into a smartphone enthusiast, but should seem plausibly aware of how the modern world works. The comments came as Lee Child discussed the latest novel, *Chain Reaction*.
- Lee Child said Reacher had fallen implausibly far behind on technology.
- Andrew Child was asked to make the character more believable.
- The change is intended to be gradual, not a tech makeover.
