Japan is known for world-class events – but the Asian Games were chaotic

BBC World ·

The Asian Games in Nagoya and Aichi were disrupted by accommodation and transport problems, diplomatic errors and confusion over volunteer tickets. The incidents matter because they inconvenienced participants and raised concerns about Japan’s ability to organise future international sporting events.

Organisers planned rooms for 15,000 delegation members, but late additions brought the total to 17,000, prompting the use of an Italian cruise ship with 1,500 cabins and container-style units. Other problems included athletes being sent to the wrong venues and South Korean teams encountering errors with national symbols. The Games had more participants than the Paris Olympics; organisers acknowledged the difficulties and said they responded to feedback.

  • Late participant increases strained Nagoya’s accommodation capacity.
  • Transport and diplomatic errors disrupted the Games.
  • Organisers said they addressed feedback and made improvements.
