Jay Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, has returned to Tenerife for a Channel 5 documentary exploring the circumstances of her son’s death. Slater, 19, disappeared in June 2024 after attending a music festival and was found 29 days later; an inquest concluded that he had accidentally fallen from height, with no evidence of third-party involvement. The programme also addresses the distress caused to his family by widespread online speculation and conspiracy theories.

Duncan visited the Rural de Teno national park with her brother and pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd, who carried out the British post-mortem. A delayed Spanish report concluded that Slater died after falling into an 82ft ravine, while Shepherd told his mother that his severe head injuries probably caused immediate death, meaning he was unlikely to have experienced prolonged pain. The documentary follows Slater’s final movements after he became lost, frightened and without water, and examines Duncan’s continuing feelings of guilt and unanswered questions.
