British actor Jean Lodge, best known for playing Queen Guinevere in the 1954 film *The Black Knight*, has died aged 99. Her death marks the loss of a prolific performer from the post-war era of British film, television and West End theatre, who was also the mother of actors and directors Charles and David Shaughnessy.

Lodge died peacefully in her sleep on 5 August, one day after her 99th birthday, her granddaughter Amy Shaughnessy said. Born in Hull in 1927, she appeared in films including *White Corridors*, *Brandy for the Parson* and *The Hellfire Club*, and was married to *Upstairs, Downstairs* chief writer Alfred Shaughnessy until his death in 2005.
