Jeff VanderMeer has announced Abdication, the fifth and final novel in his Southern Reach series, extending what had previously been described as a four-book sequence. The announcement matters because it brings the acclaimed science-fiction story of the mysterious Area X and the agency overseeing it towards a planned conclusion.

The series began with Annihilation in 2014, followed by Authority and Acceptance, and later continued with Absolution in 2024. VanderMeer shared a brief, surreal teaser and an image of the manuscript’s contents page; Macmillan Publishers will release Abdication on 12 October 2027. Annihilation was adapted into Alex Garland’s 2018 film starring Natalie Portman.
