John Fetterman defends Trump supporters, condemns fellow Democrats’ ‘f— Trump’ strategy

Fox News · 2 months ago

Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, has publicly criticised his own party's confrontational approach to President Donald Trump, arguing that Democrats need to change their anti-Trump strategy. Speaking on Tuesday's episode of the "Impaulsive" podcast, Fetterman—who has broken with the party's left wing on numerous occasions—said some Democrats were literally running campaign advertisements built around a "f— Trump" message, and warned that branding political opponents as "fascists" wrongly tarred ordinary Trump voters he knows and respects. His remarks matter because they highlight ongoing internal divisions within the Democratic Party over messaging and tone heading into a polarised political climate.

Fetterman characterised modern politics as a "race to the bottom" between two parties and stressed that he represents a state that voted for Trump's re-election in 2024, meaning he must serve all constituents. He rejected political tribalism and name-calling, insisting that Trump supporters "love our country no less" and are "good people" with different views. He also recalled taking heavy criticism for accepting an invitation to dinner with Trump in 2025, framing it as an example of bipartisan outreach, and argued there was "no equivalent" willingness among Democrats to reach across the aisle.
