Juliana Stratton makes history with Black women in the Senate
Juliana Stratton won election to the US Senate for Illinois, defeating Republican Don Tracy. Her victory matters nationally: when she takes office, she will join two other Black women senators, marking the first time three Black women have served in the Senate at once.
Stratton, currently Illinois lieutenant governor, will succeed retiring Democrat Dick Durbin, who served five terms. She was elected lieutenant governor twice alongside Governor JB Pritzker, who endorsed her in a competitive Democratic primary. Stratton supports Medicare for All and has criticised President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and federal immigration agents in Chicago.
In short
- Juliana Stratton won Illinois’s Senate race.
- She will succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin.
- Three Black women will serve in the Senate together for the first time.
