Karl Bushby returns to Hull after 28-year walk from Chile
Former paratrooper Karl Bushby has returned to Hull after a 28-year journey on foot from the southern tip of South America. His arrival ends the Goliath Expedition and brings him back to a family he left when his son was eight; his granddaughter, now 12, has never met him in person.
Bushby, 57, estimates he has taken 75 million steps across 30 countries, facing war zones, frozen seas, border restrictions, the financial crash and the pandemic. He began walking north from Punta Arenas, Chile, on 1 November 1998, with about £500 and a rule that he could not use transport to advance along his route. He had expected the trip to take 12 years.
In short
- Karl Bushby has completed his 28-year walk home to Hull.

Explained simply
The Goliath Expedition was Karl Bushby’s attempt to walk from Punta Arenas, at the southern end of Chile, back to his home city of Hull. He set off in 1998 with little money and a rule that he could not use transport to move forward on the route.
The journey crossed 30 countries and took far longer than the 12 years he first expected. War, border restrictions, financial difficulties and the pandemic all affected his progress.
Bushby’s return also reunites him with family he left behind: his son was eight when he set off, and his 12-year-old granddaughter has not met him in person before.
