KENNY HICKEY: TYPE O NEGATIVE Was Offered ‘A Lot Of Money’ To Play One PETER STEELE Tribute Concert
Former TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey says the surviving members have been offered a large sum to play a Peter Steele tribute concert, but a single show would not justify the work involved. A reunion remains unlikely because rebuilding the performance would require extensive musical and visual preparation, as well as a singer and bassist capable of doing justice to Steele’s distinctive style.
Hickey said the band would need multiple shows for the project to be viable, and that it might happen only as a tribute event if the logistics can be arranged. Former keyboardist Josh Silver has not committed; Hickey said Silver would need to be fully committed and has other responsibilities. TYPE O NEGATIVE effectively ended after Steele died of heart failure in April 2010, aged 48.
In short
- The band received an offer for one tribute show.
- Hickey says a single concert would not make the project viable.
- Josh Silver has not committed to taking part.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A tribute concert could honour Peter Steele and give fans a rare chance to celebrate the band’s music together. If the surviving members can find performers who respect Steele’s distinctive style and agree on the musical and visual preparation, several shows might make the substantial effort worthwhile.
The case against
A one-off concert may not justify the work needed to recreate the band’s sound and presentation, especially when finding a singer and bassist who can do justice to Steele’s distinctive role is difficult. The band ended after his death, and without full commitment from the surviving members, declining the offer could better respect both the practical demands and the group’s legacy.
