The condition has emotional significance because her father, Robert Kardashian, died from oesophageal cancer aged 59 in 2003, prompting concern from her family in a trailer for the eighth season of *The Kardashians*.

The trailer shows Kim discussing the diagnosis with her make-up team while lying in a hospital bed, and her mother Kris Jenner becoming upset when asked whether it was the same illness that killed Robert. Robert and Kris were married for 13 years and had four children; he was also a lawyer and long-time friend of OJ Simpson. Kim has previously spoken about her father’s final advice and continued to pay tribute to him since his death.
