Malcolm Spellman & Glasses Malone Talk ‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga,’ The Importance of Authenticity & What to Expect in the Season Finale

Billboard ·

*The Drop: A Snowfall Saga* shifts the story four years beyond *Snowfall*, following Wanda as she tries to rebuild her life and establish herself as a record executive in early 1990s Los Angeles. Showrunner Malcolm Spellman and consultant Glasses Malone say the series connects the emerging West Coast rap industry with the era’s crack epidemic, gang culture and policing, while also placing family and emotional depth at its centre.

The eight-episode spin-off stars Gail Bean as Wanda and Isaiah John as Leon, following their return from Ghana. Spellman says the original *Snowfall* showrunners and FX had already proposed a story about the record industry, which he saw as a mirror to the upheaval depicted in *Snowfall*. Malone praised the show’s nuanced portrayal of neighbourhood ties across gang lines, and the interview appeared ahead of the season finale airing on 27 October.

In short

  • The spin-off follows Wanda into the early 1990s Los Angeles rap business.
  • Its creators link West Coast hip-hop’s rise with the era’s social upheaval.
  • Family and nuanced gang culture are central to the series.
