An inquest found that Alfie Goddard, 25, died accidentally after taking a fatal quantity of caffeine capsules bought online. He became delirious, walked barefoot and vomited blood before suffering cardiac arrest in hospital, highlighting the risks posed by highly concentrated caffeine products and the vulnerabilities of people with complex mental-health conditions.

Goddard, who lived in supported accommodation in Colchester and had ADHD, autism, drug-induced psychosis and paranoid schizophrenia, took the capsules on 28 October 2025. Toxicology found caffeine levels within the range associated with fatality, while police discovered numerous capsules in his room; his family said he had ordered supplements in bulk and was unaware of their dangers.
