Spain is deploying additional police officers to the Costa del Sol following a series of gangland shootings and the discovery of a torture chamber used by drug traffickers. The announcement was made after a Turkish 47-year-old man was shot in the face whilst dining at a Malaga marina restaurant on Tuesday evening. This escalation is significant given that the region is a major holiday destination welcoming millions of visitors annually, raising concerns about public safety amid organised crime activity.

Recent incidents in the area include the shooting of Umit Yalcin at Lounge Bar Plaza, a fatal shooting on Friday where a 20-year-old man named Nacho was killed (later found to have no criminal links), and a shooting near a four-star hotel in Marbella on 8 September that resulted in arrests and hospitalisation. A torture chamber was discovered in a villa in Estepona several days earlier. Government officials claim that 100% of firearm incidents have been solved over the past three years, but opposition politicians and police chiefs have criticised resource shortages, with one chief describing the situation as "a ticking time bomb."
