Prosecutors say man planned artist’s killing and stole from her accounts
George Gordon, 65, admits killing artist Delia McInerney, 62, but says he acted in self-defence. Prosecutors told Liverpool Crown Court that he planned her murder after learning she intended to move to Portugal, then hid her remains and tried to conceal her death. The case matters because the prosecution alleges he also impersonated her and took money from her accounts after she died.
The jury heard that McInerney was due to fly to Portugal on 13 April 2023 with her five guinea pigs, and prosecutors say she died on 11 or 12 April. They allege Gordon bought items including a sledgehammer, drugs and a surgical handbook, dismembered her body and placed it with the animals in a chest freezer. Police found the remains at his St Helens flat on 8 January 2026, after he allegedly sent messages posing as McInerney for 18 months and obtained money and credit in her name.
In short
- Gordon admits killing McInerney but claims self-defence.
- Prosecutors allege he hid her remains in a freezer.
- She had planned to move to Portugal with five guinea pigs.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The prosecution’s case is that Gordon deliberately killed McInerney to prevent her move to Portugal, then concealed her death and impersonated her to obtain money and credit. It points to the alleged advance purchases, the handling of her remains, and the messages and financial activity in her name as evidence of planning and concealment.
The case against
Gordon admits causing McInerney’s death but says he acted in self-defence, so his account is that the killing was not a planned murder. The alleged purchases and later concealment may be relevant evidence, but the jury must assess what they establish about his intent and the circumstances of her death; the prosecution’s further allegations remain to be proved.
