The pairing marks the first time these two characters have joined forces against Tony Stark, adding a fresh threat to a rogues' gallery that already includes the Mandarin, Madame Masque and Obadiah Stane, and signalling a significant new arc for the ongoing series.

Issue #8, written by Joshua Williamson, confirms that Whiplash — Anton Vanko, whose hatred of Stark stems from a tragedy involving his father and village — has returned with an upgraded, more imposing appearance. The identity of the freed prisoner, described as an old enemy who has been awaiting revenge for roughly two decades, is revealed within the issue, which is now available to buy, teasing a formidable new alliance against Iron Man.
