Marvel Officially Renames Gambit Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Return
Marvel Comics has given Gambit the new codename Wyvern in *Uncanny X-Men* #32, as a curse transforms him into a dragon-like figure. The change matters because it reframes his new abilities as a dangerous corruption rather than a straightforward upgrade, while the character is receiving renewed attention ahead of Channing Tatum’s return in *Avengers: Doomsday*.
The curse originates from an artefact Gambit stole from the ancient dragon Sadurang and grants powers including teleportation, but is increasingly affecting his body and mind. After using the form to help stop an alien attack, Gambit and Rogue leave the X-Men to seek a cure; Sadurang has warned that the curse could make him kill those he loves, while Monet and Quicksilver remain to help lead the team.
